Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Eight Centuries of Ramsay Chieftains
Commanding a bend of the River South Esk, Dalhousie was founded in the 1200s by the Ramsay family. It successfully resisted a siege by England's King Henry IV in 1400 and sheltered Oliver Cromwell before the Battle of Dunbar in 1650.
The Barrel-Vaulted Dungeon Restaurant
Retaining its thick red sandstone drum towers, battlements, and dry moat, the castle preserves its original bottle dungeon and private chapel, set within wooded parkland.
