About Dundas Castle
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Dundas Castle is one of Scotland's most magnificent baronial estates. The ancestral home of the Dundas family since the 12th century, the site features a massive 15th-century L-plan tower house or keep. This fortress was built under a license granted by King Robert III in 1416 and survived a siege in 1449.
In 1818, the family commissioned renowned architect William Burn to construct a grand Tudor-Gothic mansion directly adjacent to the ancient keep. Burn's design features sweeping battlements, grand staircases, and ornate turrets, creating a striking architectural ensemble that blends medieval defense with 19th-century luxury.
Used as a barrage balloon headquarters during World War II, the estate was extensively restored in the 1990s by Sir Jack Stewart-Clark. Today, Dundas Castle is recognized as a five-star private venue, surrounded by rolling hills, a private loch, and formal gardens near South Queensferry.
