About Eildon Hills Triple Peaks & Roman Trimontium Ridge

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

The Three Volcanic Peaks of Trimontium

Rising dramatically above the Tweed Valley, the Eildon Hills were named 'Trimontium' (Three Mountains) by the Roman legions who established their northern military headquarters at their base in AD 79.

Bronze Age Capital and Panoramic Panoramas

Eildon Hill North (404m) was once the fortified capital of the Celtic Selgovae tribe, holding over 300 roundhouses. A rewarding ascent from Melrose square leads to the mid-peak (422m) offering 360-degree vistas extending to the Cheviots.
