Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

The Edinburgh Malt Provenance

Founded in 1837 by farmers John and George Rate, Glenkinchie is one of the few surviving historic Lowland single malt distilleries, operating the largest pair of copper pot wash stills in mainland Scotland.

Restored Victorian Maltings and Exhibition

A multi-million-pound restoration created an interactive sensory exhibition within the Victorian red-brick maltings, guiding visitors through barley malting, fermentation in Oregon pine washbacks, and barrel maturation in traditional dunnage warehouses.
