About Inverleith Park
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Edinburgh's Great Northern Pleasure Ground
Spanning fifty-four acres of gently sloping emerald parkland directly across from Stockbridge, Inverleith Park is one of Scotland's grandest municipal greenspaces. Acquired by the Edinburgh Corporation in 1889 from the Rocheid estate, the park was landscaped to provide light, air, and sporting recreation for the rapidly expanding northern suburbs.
Iconic Skyline Panoramas & Historic Boating Pond
The southern crest of the park offers an unrivaled panoramic perspective across the city. Visitors gazing southward enjoy an unobstructed view taking in the Georgian rooftops of Stockbridge, the soaring gothic spire of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, and the volcanic basalt silhouette of Edinburgh Castle dominating the horizon. The park's four-acre boating pond, complete with weeping willows and resident swans, has hosted model yacht enthusiasts since the late Victorian era.
Community Gardens & Sporting Heritage
Beyond its wide walking avenues lined with mature horse chestnuts and lime trees, Inverleith Park preserves extensive sporting heritage. It is home to historic rugby and cricket pitches used by the Edinburgh Academicals and Stewart's Melville FP, an ornate community sundial garden planted with herbaceous perennials, and vibrant community allotments cultivating heritage Scottish vegetables.
