About John Knox House

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

Dating back to 1470, John Knox House is one of the oldest residential buildings still standing on the Royal Mile. With its dramatic, overhanging timber galleries and intricately carved stone facades, it offers a rare glimpse into the medieval streetscape of Edinburgh before the great fires of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The house is traditionally associated with John Knox, the firebrand leader of the Scottish Reformation. Knox is reputed to have lived here briefly during the siege of Edinburgh Castle in 1572, using the prominent second-floor window to preach to crowds gathered on the street below. Inside, the museum spans several floors, displaying historic artifacts, letterpress equipment, and a magnificent 17th-century painted ceiling depicting fruits, flowers, and mythical creatures.

Today, the building is integrated with the Scottish Storytelling Centre, serving as a hub for literature, history, and narrative art. Visitors can explore the narrow winding wooden stairs, examine original oak paneling, and learn about the intense religious and political rivalries that shaped modern Scotland.
