About Merchiston Castle
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Merchiston Castle is a historic tower house located in the vibrant Merchiston area. Built in the mid-15th century by Alexander Napier, the first Laird of Merchiston, the L-plan tower was designed to withstand sieges, featuring thick stone walls, iron grilles, and high battlements.
The castle is most famous as the birthplace and home of John Napier (1550–1617), the mathematician who invented logarithms and Napier's bones, and popularized the decimal point. The tower played a key role in the Marian Civil War, suffering severe damage from artillery bombardments before being repaired and modernized.
In 1964, the tower was fully restored and integrated into the heart of Edinburgh Napier University's Merchiston Campus. The modern university buildings wrap around the historic stone keep, creating a striking contrast between ancient medieval defense and contemporary academic design.
