About Modern Two (The Dean Gallery)

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

Thomas Hamilton's Neoclassical Masterpiece

Facing Modern One across Belford Road, Modern Two occupies an imposing classical edifice erected between 1831 and 1833 to the designs of visionary architect Thomas Hamilton (who also designed Edinburgh's Royal High School on Calton Hill). Originally founded as the Dean Orphan Hospital, the building features dramatic twin front towers and rusticated stonework set within secluded wooded grounds.

World-Renowned Dada & Surrealist Collections

Converted into a modern arts gallery in 1999 by Sir Terry Farrell, Modern Two is internationally renowned for housing one of the world's most significant collections of Surrealist and Dadaist art. Visitors explore groundbreaking canvases and collages by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, and Roland Penrose, exploring the subconscious and avant-garde 20th-century movements.

Eduardo Paolozzi Studio & The Colossus Vulcan

The centerpiece of the Great Hall is Sir Eduardo Paolozzi's monumental 7.3-meter bronze sculpture 'Vulcan', depicting the Roman god of the forge as a mechanized half-human giant. Modern Two also houses an extraordinary permanent reconstruction of Paolozzi's London studio, packed with thousands of plaster casts, toys, mechanical gears, scrap metal, and reference books.
