About National Mining Museum Scotland
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Just 20 minutes south of Edinburgh via the Borders Railway, the Lady Victoria Colliery was established in 1895. Now a 5-star museum, former miners lead visitors through the immense brick pithead, the gantry, coal-washing tables, and the colossal steam engine that hoisted men and black gold from 1,600 feet underground.
Curator Insider Tip: Take the Borders Railway from Edinburgh Waverley straight to Newtongrange station—the platform exits directly into the colliery car park.
