About National Mining Museum Scotland
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Europe's Finest Victorian Industrial Colliery
Set within the monumental Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange, the National Mining Museum Scotland preserves the proud heritage of Scotland's coal mining communities. Opened in 1895, it is Europe's most intact surviving Victorian coal mine complex.
Led by veteran former coal miners, visitors experience the sights, sounds, and conditions of underground mining, stand beside the colossal steam-driven winding engine, and explore hands-on interactive engineering exhibitions in the Powerhouse.
