About The People's Story Museum
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
The History of Ordinary Edinburghers
Housed in the historic late 16th-century Canongate Tolbooth, The People's Story Museum tells the history of the ordinary working-class citizens of Edinburgh from the late 18th century to the present day. Unlike museums dedicated to royals or war, this venue focuses on everyday life, work, and protest.
"A moving and authentic look at the working class of Edinburgh. Very realistic rooms and honest displays."
Real Lives & Real Voices
The museum utilizes oral histories, diary extracts, and lifelike room reconstructions — including a cooper's workshop, a laundry, a wartime kitchen, and a pub — to illustrate the jobs, hardships, and celebrations of ordinary people. It provides a unique, grounded perspective on the city's history.
