About Scottish Parliament
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
An Architectural Statement
Located at the foot of the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament building is one of the most controversial and architecturally unique buildings in Europe. Designed by Catalan architect Enric Miralles, the building opened in 2004 and is designed to reflect Scotland's landscape, incorporating local stone, oak, and granite.
"A controversial building but an architectural marvel up close. The debating chamber is highly impressive."
Visiting and Debates
The building is open to the public for free. Visitors can take guided tours, browse exhibitions, or sit in the public gallery to watch debates when parliament is in session. The organic shapes, leaf-shaped window panels, and impressive oak roof beams of the debating chamber are highlights of the tour.
