The journey then takes us towards the shadowy depths of Loch Awe, where the brooding silhouette of Kilchurn Castle awaits. This incredibly photogenic ruin provides a tangible connection to Scotland's turbulent past and offers a perfect moment for photography enthusiasts. As the afternoon draws to a close, we begin our relaxing return journey, weaving back through the captivating Highland scenery before arriving back in the vibrant heart of Edinburgh.
Perched dramatically on a narrow, rocky spit extending into the dark waters of Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle is one of the most evocative and photographed ruins in all of Scotland. Constructed in the mid-15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, the first Lord of Glenorchy, it originally served as a formidable stronghold for the powerful Campbell clan, designed to dominate the surrounding glens and waterways. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and fortified, weathering numerous sieges and the harsh Highland elements. However, in the 1760s, a devastating lightning strike caused a massive fire, leading to its ultimate abandonment. Today, the skeletal remains of Kilchurn Castle exude a haunting, melancholic beauty. Framed by the imposing peaks of Ben Cruachan, the ruins offer a poignant glimpse into a bygone era of clan rivalries and martial power. As you gaze upon its crumbling battlements reflecting in the still waters of the loch, it is impossible not to feel deeply moved by the silent, enduring majesty of this iconic Highland monument.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts. Any cancellations after this time or no-shows on the day will not be refunded.
Kilchurn Castle ruins are currently closed internally for safety works, but the tour stops at a spectacular viewpoint by the loch for photography.
