Edinburgh Buses: Routes, Tickets, and Timetables

Edinburgh’s bus network is phenomenal, offering a comprehensive, 24-hour service that flawlessly connects the historic city centre to the airport, the coast, and beyond.

Navigating the historic and hilly streets of Scotland’s capital is made wonderfully accessible through its extensive bus network. Whether you are seeking a guided tour past iconic monuments or simply trying to get from your hotel to the waterfront, traveling by bus is both a highly efficient and immensely scenic way to traverse the city.

The Essential Edinburgh Hop-On Hop-Off Tourist Bus

If you are looking to get your bearings while soaking in the majestic skyline, a dedicated tourist bus is unequivocally one of the finest introductions to the capital. The classic hop-on hop-off service operates a spectacular, roughly one-hour circuit that glides past Edinburgh's most celebrated landmarks. Sit back on the open top deck as you sweep past the vibrant Princes Street, the dramatic peaks of Calton Hill, the historic Grassmarket, the royal residence of Holyrood House, the neoclassical Scottish National Gallery, and, of course, the imposing silhouette of Edinburgh Castle.

You can listen to fascinating recorded commentary—available through provided earphones in English alongside eight other languages—and hop off whenever a particular attraction catches your eye, simply rejoining the tour when you are ready to move on.

Hop-On Hop-Off Ticket Prices (Valid for 24 Hours)

  • Adults: £18.00

Navigating Public Buses: Lothian vs. First

For everyday travel, Edinburgh is serviced by a couple of major bus operators, primarily Lothian and First. While they occasionally share the exact same bus stops, they operate entirely different routes with distinct bus numbers.

Lothian Buses is by far the dominant operator. Their expansive fleet provides comprehensive coverage across the entire city centre and immediate suburbs. Conversely, First Bus manages fewer routes and primarily focuses on connecting the city with the wider, outlying outskirts. If you are staying centrally and require a multi-journey day pass, securing a Lothian ticket is almost always the most logical and practical choice.

How to Pay: Contactless & Exact Fares

Modernising the commute, the absolute easiest method to pay for your journey is via a contactless debit card, credit card, or digital wallet (such as Apple Pay or Google Pay). However, the specific tapping rules depend entirely on which operator you are riding with:

  • On Lothian Buses: You only need to tap your card on the reader as you board the bus. You do not tap off. The brilliantly smart system automatically tracks your journeys and applies a daily cap, ensuring you never overpay.
  • On First Buses: You must "tap on" when boarding and crucially "tap off" when disembarking, allowing the system to calculate the exact distance of your specific fare. (Alternatively, you can prepay using the dedicated First Bus mobile app).

A vital note for cash payers: If you are purchasing a single, return, or day ticket with physical currency on either network, you must have the absolute exact change. The drivers cannot, and will not, provide change. Your coins are dropped directly into the clear fare box located at the front of the bus.

Current Public Bus Fares (Updated May 2025)

Whether you are making a quick jump across town or exploring all day, understanding the fare structure is crucial:

  • Standard Single Journey: Adult £2.20 | Child £1.10
  • Lothian DAYticket (Unlimited city buses & trams): Adult £5.50 | Child £2.75 (Note: First Bus does not offer an equivalent day ticket)
  • Lothian Airport DAYticket (Includes airport travel): Adult £9.00 | Child £4.50 (Note: First Bus does not operate routes to the airport)

Important Exclusions: Please be aware that the standard Lothian DAYticket is strictly not valid for use on the nocturnal Night Buses, nor can it be used on the Airlink (Service 100) express route to Edinburgh Airport.

Timetables and the Night Network

The standard daytime network is impressively robust, with most routes operating daily from 6:00 AM right through to midnight. However, Scotland’s capital has a legendary nightlife, and the transport system accommodates this brilliantly. After the stroke of midnight, the dedicated Night Bus network takes over. Easily identified by a prominent "N" prefix before the route number (such as the N22), these nocturnal buses operate across selected, essential routes, ensuring you can always find a safe and reliable journey back to your accommodation after hours.
