Typical Opening Hours

Knowing when shops, museums, pubs, and restaurants open and close in Edinburgh helps you plan your days efficiently and avoid the frustration of arriving at locked doors.

Edinburgh follows its own rhythm, shaped by Scottish legislation, local traditions, and the dramatic transformation that occurs every August during festival season. Unlike England and Wales, Scotland has its own rules on Sunday trading and alcohol licensing, so assumptions based on previous UK travel may not always hold true.

Shops and Retail

Weekday and Saturday Hours

High street shops, independent boutiques, and department stores in Edinburgh's city centre typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Major shopping centres such as the St James Quarter and Ocean Terminal extend their hours, remaining open until 8:00 PM on most weekdays. Thursday is traditionally Edinburgh's late-night shopping evening, with many stores staying open until 8:00 or 9:00 PM.

Sunday Trading

Unlike England and Wales, where strict legislation limits large stores to six consecutive hours of Sunday trading, Scotland has no such restriction. Supermarkets and large retailers are free to set their own Sunday hours and typically operate from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. However, in smaller towns, particularly in the Highlands, Borders, and the Western Isles, Sunday remains a deeply respected day of rest, and you may find independent shops and services closed entirely.

Museums and Attractions

National institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery are open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free general admission. Historic properties managed by Historic Environment Scotland—including Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse—operate on seasonal timetables:

  • Summer (April–September): 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM
  • Winter (October–March): 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Last admission is typically one hour before closing. It is always worth checking the specific attraction's website on the day of your visit, as occasional closures for private events or maintenance can occur.

Restaurants and Cafés

Edinburgh's dining scene operates on a fairly standard schedule. Most cafés open between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM, serving breakfast and brunch through to early afternoon. Restaurants typically open for lunch from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM and for dinner from 5:30 PM to 9:30 or 10:00 PM. During the Festival Fringe in August, many restaurants extend their hours significantly, with some kitchens remaining open past midnight.

Pubs and Alcohol Licensing

Scottish pub culture is legendary, but the sale of alcohol is tightly regulated by law.

  • Pub opening hours: Most pubs open from 11:00 AM to midnight, Monday to Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday, many hold extended licences until 1:00 AM. Nightclubs and late-night venues typically close between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
  • Off-sales (supermarkets and shops): Alcohol can only be purchased in shops between 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM. This is strictly enforced—attempting to buy a bottle of wine at 10:05 PM will be politely refused at the checkout.

Festival Season: August Rules

During August, Edinburgh's normal operating hours are effectively suspended. The city hosts the world's largest arts festival, and the entire urban rhythm shifts to accommodate over four million visitors. Cafés and restaurants extend their hours deep into the evening. The council grants temporary licences allowing many pubs and pop-up bars to serve until 3:00 AM or later. Street food markets, beer gardens, and temporary performance venues spring up across the city, operating from late morning until the early hours. If you visit during festival season, the concept of "closing time" becomes wonderfully elastic.
